The Holy Spirit is a mystery to me. Even if you grew up in a more charismatic church, I bet the Spirit is a mystery to you also.
In John’s gospel, Jesus tells a curious Pharisee, Nicodemus, that the Spirit is like the wind. He teaches, “The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit” (John 3:8).
By a mysterious work of the Holy Spirit, life, mercy, and grace were breathed into you the moment you first accepted Jesus as Lord. Maybe you were expecting Him, maybe you were not. But, His move to dwell within you brought light and life to dry bones.
But, the life-giving work of the Holy Spirit does not stop there. As we walk with Jesus, He dwells within us. A constant companion and Helper. He opens our eyes to God’s glory, our hearts to God’s love, and He guides us into all truth (John 16:13-15).
This same Spirit is even available to help us cleanse the words on our tongues. We do not have to be burdened by trying to serve two masters, but we can turn to Jesus with humble hearts. We can use our lips to ask for help.
“If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him.” Luke 11:13
Rejoice! Jesus graciously gives His Spirit to those who ask -- even those whose words have been tinged with rebellion and pride. It is the Spirit who can transform our words and hearts from the way of death to the way of life. All we must do is ask!
“If anyone speaks, let it be as one who speaks God’s words...” (1 Peter 4:11)
So, let us pray for the Spirit to impart knowledge, wisdom, and patience upon us. Let us throw off the doublemindedness that causes our speech to be lukewarm and complicated. Let us be willing to receive help from the Spirit to mold our words in the image of our Father.
Let us be like humble Elizabeth, who praised and exalted Jesus the Messiah by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit!
In the comments below share about an area in your life where you are praying for the Holy Spirit’s inspiration.
